The recent history of changing conceptions of culture and the implications for ethnography and educational research are the subjects of this chapter. The first section discusses thematic shifts in the conceptions of culture that have been salient in the work of educational anthropologists and sociologists during the past three decades. The second section argues that ethnographers have been slow to take up some important challenges posed by changing conceptions of culture.
